SPEED & PERFORMANCE PROFILE
60+ MPH Top Speed:
The 2023 General XP 4 1000 Ultimate delivers confident sport-utility performance with a top speed exceeding 60+ mph in high range. Professional testing confirmed the vehicle reached 60 mph on a flat gravel road and “might have gone faster, but we ran out of patience and road before it got there” . This provides ample velocity for trail riding, property exploration, and spirited adventures.
30 MPH Low Range Gearing:
With the transmission in low range, the General is governed to 30 mph, which is “perfect for the twisty, pine-tree-laden technical trails” . This gearing allows for precise control when climbing rock faces or navigating tight wooded sections without constantly shifting between high and low.
100 HP ProStar Engine:
At the heart of the General XP 4 1000 Ultimate is the proven ProStar 999cc DOHC twin-cylinder engine producing 100 horsepower and 65 lb-ft of torque . Engine highlights include:
- 4-stroke DOHC design with 8 valves (4 per cylinder) for efficient breathing
- Electronic Fuel Injection for crisp throttle response in all conditions
- Liquid cooling for consistent performance during demanding operation
- Regular gas fuel requirements for easy refueling
- Ample low end that pulls smoothly through the powerband
As ATVConnection.com noted, “That 1000cc fuel injected mill is good for 100hp and that fact reveals itself at just about every corner of the powerspread. It offers ample low end and pulls smoothly until you either run out of room or courage” .
On-Demand True AWD with VersaTrac Turf Mode:
The advanced drive system offers exceptional versatility with three selectable modes:
- 2WD: Efficient operation for light-duty use and sporty driving
- On-Demand True AWD: Automatically engages front wheels when rear traction loss is detected
- VersaTrac Turf Mode: Unlocks the rear differential for tight turns without damaging sensitive surfaces
Engine Deceleration Assist (EDA):
The General features standard engine braking that “makes steep descents very controlled and effortless” . This system helps maintain reduced vehicle speed during descents without excessive brake use, especially valuable when carrying heavy loads.

Ride Quality:
The Walker Evans Velocity Series shocks feature a wide range of threaded preload adjustment and 15-plus clicks of compression adjustment . When using the factory shock settings, “the ride is smooth, both at low and high speeds. The suspension effectively minimizes the impact of uneven terrain, trail chop, embedded rocks and washboard while still providing a sense of connection to the surface below. Even when hitting hard edges at high speed or dropping off rock ledges, the ride remains cushioned” .
Stability:
One thing reviewers particularly noticed was the lack of body roll. The General is equipped with front and rear stabilizer bars that had testers “railing corners with confidence” .
Tire Performance:
The 8-ply Pro Armor Crawler XG tires “perform well over hard surfaces and loose terrain and have plenty of sidewall protection” . Recommended pressures are 16 psi front / 22 psi rear, but testers dropped to 12/15 for a softer ride and widened contact patch with great results.

THE DRIVE EXPERIENCE
Professional testers who extensively tested the 2023 General XP 4 1000 Ultimate came away thoroughly impressed :
On Versatility:
“Somehow, though, Polaris manages to deliver a SxS that is every bit as competent as it is exploring, cruising, creek crossing, climbing and camping as it is tugging, towing, hauling and working. Suddenly many of the machines we’ve got around here look a whole lot more like one-trick ponies by comparison.”
On Comfort:
“The General, by comparison, is smooth, torquey, relaxed and capable. The first few rides had us wondering what the catch was – off-roading shouldn’t be this effortless, this confident, this comfortable. This would become a repeating pattern in our time spent on planet General; the only catch is that there is no catch.”
On Handling:
“The General is a great performer. It’s powerful, smooth, comfortable and stable.” In 2WD, the rear tires would break loose at times, but keeping On-Demand AWD engaged “eliminates pushing through the corners while pulling the machine through turns like it was designed to do.”
On Capability:
“If forced to describe the General 1000 experience in a single word, that word would be confident.” The vehicle “hammers rough terrain, moves out with authority, works all day without hesitation and provides way more operator comfort than any off-road vehicle has a right to.”
